Forest Management Meeting and Tour—Saturday, April 10, 2010, from 2-3:30 p.m

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will hold two public meetings in April to discuss the agency’s plan for prescribed burns in Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth.
Each meeting will include a presentation and an opportunity for questions and answers. The second meeting also will include an optional site visit conducted by DCR staff to view the planned burn treatment areas.

The public meeting is Saturday, April 10, 2010, from 2-3:30 p.m., at the Myles Standish State Forest Headquarters on Cranberry Road, South Carver. A site visit in the forest will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Prescribed burns are controled fires that create buffer zones, which increase the safety of nearby residents and firefighters in the event of a wildfire. Prescribed burns also mitigate the threat of wildfires by reducing hazardous, flammable vegetation and improve the ecology of the forests.

DCR plans several prescribed burns this year in Myles Standish State Forest that will be conducted by DCR’s Bureau of Forest Fire Control. Prescribed burns are part of a major effort by DCR to reduce threats posed by wildfires to the residents of the Commonwealth.

For more information on the public meetings, call 617-626-4974 or email DCR.Updates@state.ma.us.

Bird Support Group — American Woodcock Observation and Organizational Meeting

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

6:30 PM American Woodcock Observation

7:30 PM Organizational Meeting

Myles Standish State Forest Headquarters, Carver, MA

Friends of Myles Standish State Forest invites interested birders to view the courtship display of the American woodcock, and afterward, attend a meeting to determine community interest in forming a pine barrens bird support group.

At 6:30 PM, FMSSF Bird Chair Glenn d'Entremont, nominator of Myles Standish State Forest (MSSF) for designation as an Important Bird Area (IBA), will lead a carpool to an area where we may view the aerial display and mating behavior of the American woodcock. The outing will begin promptly from the MSSF Headquarters parking lot.

At 7:30 PM, we will return to the MSSF Headquarters for the meeting. Those who cannot make the American woodcock outing are welcome to join the group at that time. The meeting will be held in the Headquarters Conference Building (the large building with a staircase entrance across the street from the Headquarters).
Come share your knowledge, experience and interests, and help us determine how best to foster native birds in MSSF and the pine barrens region. Glenn d'Entremont will direct the meeting. Kathleen Frisbie, Founder of The Place for Wild Birds, Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to caring for the wild birds of SE MA, will be on hand to share her expertise.

Please attend only if you’ll consider joining a group whose mission will be to promote native birds and the habitat they need to survive. This group will cooperate with the Pine Barrens Community Initiative, a regional partnership to preserve the SE MA pine barrens ecosystem.

Allow extra time to get to the Headquarters if you are not familiar with the forest. Here is a printable map of MSSF For information email friends@friendsmssf.com

"The American Woodcock , a rotund little shorebird that rarely sees the shore, is known to some as "Timberdoodle" or even "Bogsucker." How can you not love him. Especially when you experience his courtship dance." (excerpt from http://mrines.com/Birds/woodcock/)
