Mission of Friends of Myles Standish State Forest The goal of Friends of Myles Standish State Forest is to help preserve and maintain this natural public treasure. Our mission is to foster recreational use of the forest in a manner consistent with the protection and preservation of the environment. We are dedicated to restoring and maintaining the forest and its trails, to providing education about natural ecosystems, and to promoting robust wildlife habitats. Our intention is to encourage a strong partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the many volunteers who share our vision. ***So far, we have over 60 Friends from at least 12 different communities. We hold regular meetings once a month with work parties and events during the year. To find out when the next meeting or event will be click here. Myles Standish State Forest Information MSSF is the largest publicly owned conservation and recreation area in Southeastern Massachusetts, encompassing nearly 15,000 acres. That’s almost 20 times larger than New York’s Central Park! Did you know that Nature Conservancy marks MSSF as one of the most significant natural ecosystems in the Northeastern United States? For recreational activities, MSSF offers 15 miles of paved bike trails; 13 miles of hiking trails; cross country skiing; swimming, canoeing, and fishing on several of its 35 ponds; 425 individual campsites and three group sites; thirty-five miles of equestrian trails and a designated equestrian campground. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors close to home! Unfortunately, because of State budget cuts, too few rangers patrol the trails. A very meager allowance delays necessary maintenance and improvements. The biggest complaint is that it feels unsafe, and garbage dumping is an ongoing concern. As friends of MSSF, we will address these issues and more. We want to help restore and preserve sensitive ecological areas. We also want to enhance the experience of every authorized user group. Our plan is to partner with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and to include all user groups in projects to help the Myles Standish State Forest.
